Gaston Glock created his famous austrian company in 1963, first producing and selling curtain rods and then field knives for the army using an injection-moulding machine installed in his garage. In 1980, thanks to his employees expertise in polymers and after hearing expert shooters from all over the world, he started designing the ideal semi-automatic handgun to replace the army’s old one.
After 3 months of hard work, he patented the Glock 17, combining proven mechanisms and design features with a smart use of plastic parts to reduce both production cost and weight.
His prototype performed way better than any other competitors, and the handgun was therefore adopted as the P80. Several other armies and police forces followed. The Glock 17 was then used as a base to develop new versions in a variety of sizes and calibers, for both professionals and civilians.
Glock pistols are now the most widely used in the world, being officially adopted in almost 70 countries for which their numerous qualities are proven daily ; confirming the armorer’s motto, Glock Perfection.
