Established in 1939 as a brazilian tool manufacturing company, Taurus started gunsmithing as soon as 1941, producing hybrids of Colt and Smith & Wesson mechanisms. In 1971, the link with S&W is strenghtened when Taurus Armas was bought by the former’s parent company, Bangor Punta Corporation, allowing Taurus to produce more under-license S&W revolvers.
But Taurus really became famous after buying the Beretta factory of São Paulo in 1980, as well as the linked blueprints and exploitation rights for the Beretta 92. The brazilian gunsmithing company soon produced a large panel of clones of the known 9mm pistol, and then its own derivatives.
Taurus now makes a lot of different firearms, from revolvers to assault rifles, as well as lever-action rifles and semi automatic pistols, in a wide range of calibers.
