This dagger has large proportions with a thick diamond section blade with a finely formed down-turned guard and large ring guard. These daggers were used primarily in the left hand to parry an opponents blows. The stepped decorative finials of the down turned guard could also be used to engage an opponents blade, even if only briefly to provide the opportunity for a counter thrust.
