Spring and gas piston are two common drive systems in air rifles. A cock compresses a steel spring or a tight gas piston inside the weapon, and when you press the button, the pressure is released and shoots the diabolo through the barrel. Nothing needs to be refilled between shots – just cock and shoot.
Gas pistons provide a softer, more controlled recoil than a classic spring, which many appreciate when mounting a red dot or telescopic sight. The spring system is in turn simpler mechanically and often lasts longer without service.
