Offset Hooks

Offset hooks are mainly used when you want to fish where it is otherwise easy to get caught. The design allows the hook to be hidden in the bait, which makes it possible to fish close to vegetation, water lilies and structures without constantly getting caught. This is precisely why offset hooks are very popular when fishing for perch, pike and zander.

Offset fishing is especially common during the summer when the vegetation has grown and the fish like to stay close to cover. With the right offset hook, you can present the bait in the middle of the interesting area instead of having to fish outside. In this category there are both unweighted and weighted offset hooks, as well as models with different types of accessories that affect how the bait moves in the water.

What is an offset hook?

An offset hook has a curved hook shape that allows the bait to be threaded so that the hook tip is protected against the body of the jig. This allows the bait to slide through vegetation and over the bottom without the hook constantly catching.

This hard type of hook is used almost exclusively with soft baits and is especially common when fishing in shallow areas with a lot of vegetation.

Offset hooks for summer fishing

During the summer, vegetation creeps up in many waters. Grass, water lilies and reeds create perfect resting places for predatory fish, but at the same time make it difficult to fish with regular hooks. Offset hooks solve that problem and allow you to fish exactly where the fish are.

This is a big reason why offset hooks are very popular when fishing for perch, pike and goose during warmer periods.

Weighted and unweighted offset hooks

Offset hooks are available both with and without weights. Unweighted hooks are often used when you want to fish slowly and let the bait sink freely or slide just above the bottom and vegetation.

Weighted offset hooks have the weight placed on the hook and provide more control over depth and sink rate. They are used when you want clearer bottom contact or fish a little deeper without switching to a traditional jig head.

With or without screw

Many offset hooks are equipped with a so-called shallow screw or bait screw at the front. It makes it easier to get the bait straight and makes the jig sit better while fishing.

There are also offset hooks without a screw, where the bait is threaded directly onto the hook. The choice is mostly about personal preference and the type of soft bait used.

Extra accessories and movement

Some offset hooks have extra details such as a hook, vibration elements or small plates that give more life to the bait. These can create extra movement or noise when the bait is fished, which can sometimes make a difference when the fish is difficult to catch.

Adjust the hook to the bait

As with all jig fishing, it is important that the hook size matches the length and body of the bait. A hook that is too large can make the bait stiff, while a hook that is too small will give poor hooking. The hook should be set so that the bait retains its natural movement.

To think about when choosing an offset hook

  • Use an offset hook when fishing near vegetation
  • Common choice for perch, pike and goose fishing
  • Weight controls sinking speed and depth
