Leaders & material

Ready-made leaders or your own leader material

Many people choose ready-made leaders for the sake of simplicity. They are ready to use right away and are great when you want to change quickly or fish without preparation. At the same time, there are many who prefer to make their own jigs in order to be able to adapt the length, material and components exactly to their fishing.

To make your own leader, you often need material, bait strops and sometimes a jig or spring ring depending on how the bait is to be used. By building it yourself, you can a solution that suits your bait and your fishing style.

Choice of material for different fish species

When fishing for pike, steel lines, titanium or very coarse mono or fluorocarbon are often used. The pike's toes wear hard on the tip, which is why material around 1 mm is used when not running a wire. This provides both protection and durability.

When fishing for perch, pike and sea trout, thinner tip materials are used. There, it is more about movement and presentation than pure durability. Common dimensions are often somewhere between 0.25-0.30 mm up to around 0.50 mm, depending on the bait and fishing method.

Dimension according to the bait

A common mistake is to choose a leader solely according to the species of fish. In practice, it is at least as important to consider the bait. A small bait will lose movement if the leader is too coarse, while a larger bait can often handle coarser materials without problems.

Playing, baiting and connections

When you build your own leaders, you can choose how the bait should be connected. Bait lines are used for quick changes, while spinning reduces the risk of line twisting. In some cases, spring rings are also used to give the bait more freedom of movement.

The choice of coupling affects how the rig behaves in the water. Too large or heavy parts can hinder the bait's movement, especially when fishing for longer distances.

Length of the leader

The length of the leader varies depending on the type of fishing. Shorter pawls are often used for shallower fishing, while longer pawls are common when spinning for larger fish. The important thing is that the pawl protects the line without getting in the way of the bait.

Things to consider when choosing a leader and material

  • Adjust the material to the fish species
  • Size the leader to the bait
  • Pike fishing requires durable material
  • Thinner leaders provide better movement when fishing at low speeds
  • Choose couplings that do not interfere with the flow of the bait

Leaders and materials are not large products in themselves, but they directly affect fishing. When the material, dimension and length are right, both bait and rig work as intended, regardless of whether you are fishing for pike, perch, roach or sea trout.
