The M14 is an automatic rifle that was developed after World War II as a replacement for the M1 Garand. The model was used i.a. during the Vietnam War before being replaced by the well-known M16 model. The M14 rifle's caliber 7.62×51 mm NATO was considered unnecessarily coarse and the replacement caliber 5.56×45 mm NATO, was considered better in several respects. At longer distances, however, the coarse projectiles are more effective and the M14 came later, in various versions to serve as semi-automatic sniper weapons. The EBR is a modernized variant that is still used by military units today.
