This excellent replica is guaranteed to have people looking back at you in amazement, it is a very rarely seen Type 89 from Tokyo Marui that looks very similar to its real steel counterpart. However, it weighs just 3kg and won't make your hands ache after playing all day.

They have designed this version to have a magazine well that resembles the original Type 89 magazine well as much as possible but to take M4 magazines, which are very common and most players have several at home.

The replica is powered by a v3 mechabox and thus is simple to upgrade and possibly replace internal parts. The motor is the rather well known EG01000BT which the company puts in more premium replicas, in addition the gun has a three-shot burst.

During the Vietnam War, the United States Armed Forces replaced the M14 rifles with the new M16 types for several reasons, one of the most important being the ability to have a higher cadence, lower weight, and lower recoil when using the 5.56x45 NATO caliber cartridge than the 7.62x51 NATO caliber cartridge previously used. Despite the fact that this reduced the effective range of the average infantryman during a firefight, the 5.56x45mm (SS109) cartridge became the standard type of ammunition for all NATO member states. Following this, Japan began development of a new generation assault rifle to replace the existing 7.62x51mm Type 64 rifle after 25 years of service.

The development was primarily handled by Howa, given that they already had a license to produce the AR-180, which was a commercial version of the Armalite AR-18 rifle. In order to assess the suitability of this rifle, it was supplied in limited numbers to the Japanese Defence Forces for field trials. After collecting and evaluating the necessary data, development of a new generation assault rifle began under the designation HR-16 (HR1604). The HR-15 was the first experimental version of the rifle that would eventually become the Type 89, but was developed in 1989 alongside the HR-10, HR-11 and HR-13.
