The mayfly Ephemera danica lives 2–3 years as a nymph. It belongs to the category of burrowing mayflies (like E. vulgata) and is mostly inaccessible to fish during the nymph stage. The exception is just before hatching when the nymphs are active swimmers. E. danica is found in flowing water, E. vulgata in still water or in very slow-moving river sections. The nymph is long and slender – up to 25 mm long. As an adult insect, it can also reach the same impressive size.
There are different solutions for imitating a mayfly with such a large body. Our experience is that poly chenille is one of the most functional. It provides a flexible body that does not hinder effective hooking while the material also has good buoyancy properties.
Take the time to properly waterproof the fly. The size can make it tempting to apply too much at once. But dose it as if it were a smaller fly and apply in several stages. TMC Dry Magic, Guideline CDC Oil or Guideline CDC Gel.
