Here we are only talking about spring-operated air pistols - no CO2 cartridges, no PCP systems. If you are looking for an air pistol that is easy to use, can be loaded by hand and does not require any extra mech, then a spring model is exactly what you should have. Are you looking for a more general overview of all types instead? Then you can check out our article Air pistol best in test - there is the whole range, from CO2 to spring and PCP.
But here we focus only on spring. It is a classic choice that works for target shooting in the yard, plinking in the forest or just for fun. We have collected models that we have tested ourselves, recommended in the store and received good feedback on. As in our other article, it is the Black Ops Langley that comes out on top - a spring pistol that stands out with both feel, precision and build quality.
We have selected six spring-powered air pistols that we think stand out - not because some list says so, but because we have tested them, recommended them in the store and received good feedback from people who shoot a lot. These are models that we know will hold up to a little bit of everything: a target on the property, cans in the forest or just a few shots on a free afternoon.
The manufacturers? Umarex, Black Ops, Gamo and Hatsan - names that come up time and time again when talking about air guns. Here are both simpler variants for those who want to get started, and heavier builds for those who want more feel in the hand.
We have tried to mix - different calibers, different loading systems and different price ranges. No matter what you are looking for, there is probably something here that clicks.
Black Ops Langley Air Pistol 4.5mm is a sturdy spring-operated model with clear inspiration from the American air base of the same name. The pistol is loaded by breaking the barrel and is built of durable high-density polymer material. It lies stable in the hand and has an overall length of 38.8cm.
On the top is a 21mm Picatinny rail for mounting optics, and the open sight is equipped with optical fiber for better visibility in low light. The FMB Breech in full metal provides long service life, and the pistol is equipped with an adjustable trigger and grip on the barrel for easier loading. A model that suits both right- and left-handed shooters.
Advantages:

The Black Ops Langley Hitman 5.5mm is a spring-operated air pistol with a distinct attitude - both in design and feel. It is inspired by the American Langley Air Force Base and the classic "Hitman" style, complete with a decorative silencer that gives it a distinctive look (note: it is a dummy and does not affect the sound level).
The pistol is loaded by breaking the barrel, and the barrel is equipped with a textured grip that makes it easier to load. The 30cm long barrel provides better precision, and the adjustable trigger system allows you to fine-tune the feel. In addition, a removable stock is included - so you can use the Hitman both as a pistol and as a compact rifle.
Built in high-density polymer, with a fiber-optic open sight and a 21mm Picatinny rail for accessories. A truly versatile model for those who want both style and function.
Advantages:

Hatsan 25 Supercharger Vortex is a really solid spring gun with gas spring - perfect for those who want maximum power without a license. It is powered by Hatsan's own Vortex Type 6 gas spring, which means less vibration, smoother recoil and better precision compared to regular coil springs. In addition, the pressure in the gas spring can be adjusted up to 100 bar.
This is one of the most powerful spring-powered guns you can own without a license in Sweden - 10 joules in impact energy. To handle that power, Hatsan has built in the XRS system that dampens recoil and provides better control. The QT trigger (Quattro Trigger) is two-stage and provides a crisp release with little drag.
The barrel is threaded (1/2 UNF) and to facilitate reloading, an aluminum barrel extension is included. The sight is adjustable and the gun has 11mm keyway if you want to mount a red dot or telescopic sight.
Advantages:

Hatsan 25 Kit in 5.5mm caliber is a complete starter kit for those who want to start air shooting - and want everything at once. Here you get a sturdy spring-operated air pistol with a rifled barrel for better precision, along with both a bullet catcher, target, ammunition and barrel extender. Just unpack and start shooting.
The pistol is loaded by breaking the barrel, and with the help of the barrel extender it becomes easier to load without having to reach for the king and fatherland. It also has built-in recoil damping, which makes it more stable in the hand and easier to hit with. Adjustable sights give you the opportunity to fine-tune the aim according to how you shoot.
Perfect for plinking in the garden or training on a target - and extra fun that you get everything in one kit. Nothing you need to buy to get started.
Advantages:

The Gamo P900 IGT is a smooth and lightweight air pistol that is perfect for simple shooting. It is loaded by breaking the barrel, and the built-in IGT technology (gas spring) provides a smoother and quieter shooting compared to traditional spring operation.
The pistol is easy to handle, weighs only 590 grams and has a grip that fits most hands. Fiber optic front sight and adjustable rear sight make it easy to aim, even in varying light. The two-stage trigger provides a smooth pressure, and the low power output makes it suitable for both younger shooters and those who just want a fun gun to plink with.

A spring-powered air pistol designed for recreational shooting and target shooting at shorter distances. The design is based on a classic break barrel, which provides easy loading and high reliability. The pistol is loaded with one shot at a time, which provides full control with each firing and makes it compatible with various types of 4.5 mm caliber diabolos.
The body is made of durable polymer with a matte finish and the ergonomic grip has rubberized surfaces for better control and a more stable grip. The rifled barrel contributes to consistent precision and the sights consist of a solid grain and adjustable sight for elevation and side adjustment. The pistol is also equipped with 11 mm slots for mounting optics or red dot sights.
Advantages:

A spring-operated air pistol is loaded by breaking the barrel or cocking the casing - then you just have to press the trigger. No CO2, no cartridges, no air tanks. This is the classic type of air pistol, and it works just as well now as it did in the past. For those who want a simple but effective gun for target shooting, plinking or just for fun in the yard, a spring model is a solid choice.
It is also one of the most maintenance-free systems. No hoses that can leak or capsules that need to be replaced - you load by hand, shoot, reload.
What makes many people choose a spring pistol over other types is its simplicity. You don't have to lug around extra stuff - the gun is all you need. Most models last a long time, are durable and often cost less than other systems.
In addition, you get a clear feeling of how the weapon works. You are responsible for the power. Many people find it more "authentic" than pressing down with a CO2 gun that just splatters.
It all depends on what you want to do. Are you just going to shoot a little at cans at home or practice aiming at targets? Then a simpler model will suffice. Do you want more pressure in the shots and a little longer range? Then it may be worth looking at something with more power - preferably close to 10 joules (that's the limit for license-free in Sweden).
Weight is also worth checking. Spring guns can be quite heavy, especially if you want one with good pressure. Some models are over 1.5 kilos - you can feel it in your arm after a while. So think about what you can handle.
Most spring-powered air pistols are in 4.5 mm (.177) caliber. This gives faster bullets, a straighter trajectory and is perfect for target practice or training. But there are also models in 5.5 mm (.22), and there you get heavier bullets and more pressure - which may be better if you shoot at a slightly longer distance or want more power in each shot.
Some models have what is called a gas spring, such as Hatsan's Vortex system. It provides a slightly smoother recoil, quieter operation and in some cases better precision. The loading is done in the same way as with a regular spring - but the feeling of firing is a little softer.
It's not a huge difference, but it's noticeable if you shoot a lot or are looking for that little extra.
Our range includes spring pistols from well-known manufacturers such as Black Ops, Hatsan, Gamo and Umarex. Some are simple, affordable models suitable for beginners or everyday shooters - others are more substantial pieces that push the bullet out with full license-free power.
Whether you're looking for something tactical, a classic grip or a slightly smaller, lightweight gun, there's something to suit. We also have complete kits with everything you need to get started right away - bullets, bullet catch, targets, barrel extensions, you name it.
