How to choose the right machete

Choosing a machete is about more than just looking at the length of the blade. There are several factors that come into play depending on what you are going to use it for - whether it is to clear up sly, pack it in your backpack, use it for survival or have it as part of your emergency preparedness.

Here we go through what you should consider to find a model that actually suits your needs.

Blade shape and length - what makes a difference?

The blade is of course the most important thing. A long machete (over 40cm) gives better reach and more power in the cut, perfect when you want to get through thick bush or coarser material. Shorter blades (around 25–35cm) are easier to carry, handle and pack down - handy if you move around a lot or are short on space.

The shape of the blade also varies. A straight blade gives good control, while a curved blade (like on a kukri or parang) often cuts deeper with less effort. Choose the one that suits you best for what you do most.

Grip - more important than you think

A good grip makes a difference, especially if you use the machete for long periods of time. Rubber or textured polymer handles often provide better grip than smooth wooden handles, especially in wet conditions. Check that the handle fits comfortably in your hand and that it doesn't slip when you swing hard.

Ergonomics and balance are also important. A machete that feels front-heavy may cut well - but will tire you out faster. Feel free to test how the weight is distributed if you have the opportunity.

Material - steel type and durability

Many machetes are made of carbon steel such as 1075 or 1065, which gives a durable blade that can withstand a lot but needs a little more maintenance (oil, wipe). Stainless steel requires less maintenance and is often better for humid climates, although it can be a little harder to sharpen properly.

Blade thickness is also worth mentioning - a thicker blade of around 3-5mm provides stability and a little weight, while thinner blades (1.5-2.5mm) are smoother and faster in movement.

Locking and sheath - not just for storage

Some models are foldable (like the Gerber Doubledown), and the locking mechanism is super important there. A stable lock reduces the risk of the blade accidentally folding when you use it. Quad Lock, liner lock or similar designs are common on more advanced models.

Also think about the sheath. Cordura, leather or reinforced nylon are common materials, and a good sheath makes it easier and safer to carry the machete. If you want it close at hand - check for belt attachments or MOLLE systems.

Weight and packability - what can you carry?

A machete weighing around 400-600g is often sufficient for simple clearing and forestry. If you want something more substantial for chopping wood or splitting larger logs, the weight is often around 800-1000g, sometimes more.

If you're going to pack it in your backpack, choose a model that doesn't take up too much space - or one that can be folded.

Find a machete that suits you

When buying a machete, it's worth giving some thought to what use is most important to you. Long or short blade? Carbon steel or stainless? Easy to carry or extra power in the cut? There's no one best for everyone - but the right model makes the job both easier and more fun.
